Spring Babies: Oh, Deer

What should you do if you find a baby fawn? Nothing. I recently learned that this bit of guidance is not common knowledge and therefore decided to create this post in order to share life-saving information as well as adorable photos of some uninvited guests. While exceptions and accidents do happen, it’s usually best to trust that moms in nature know what they’re doing.

Spring Babies: This Bird Has Flown

This spring we had front-row seats to a common but rarely-seen event: a clutch of robin eggs hatching, growing, and fledging. It was only a couple weeks, but the growth and development of these babies – and the tireless efforts of their parents – was amazing to watch. It also served as a reminder that nature is brutal, and it’s usually best not to get involved.

May 2023 Pennsylvania Primary Elections

Odd-numbered years mean judicial elections in Pennsylvania, and those are far more critical than most people realize. Our courts determine how our laws are interpreted, and we the voters decide who gets to be on the bench. In other news, Allegheny County residents who are registered democrat will likely be picking our next Chief Executive from a wide field of candidates.

For the Birds

Pollinator gardens are beneficial for birds, bees, butterflies, and other animals too. However, increased residential development and the continual pressure to have a manicured, uniform lawn puts all of those creatures at risk. Some homes are pushing back against societal expectations around landscaping to create safe corridors for native species, but in more than one case, the resulting fight has gotten ugly.

November Elections, 2022, Part 4 – Shifting Authority

Although the public has no direct control over who lands in the Supreme Court, we do have direct control over who is tasked with writing the laws the Supreme Court will interpret. With a conservative supermajority on the bench evaluating laws that govern abortion, discrimination, and elections, it is incumbent upon us – the voters – to understand what’s at stake when we elect our legislators.

November 2022 Elections, Part 1 – Parties

Election season is upon us once again. With five (or fewer) weeks to get ready, I’m sharing my latest research on this year’s general election in Pennsylvania, which boasts candidates of five parties. Not being a fan of parties myself (or the bias they can inflict on voters), I still thought it beneficial to review the general platforms for these groups. (Election spreadsheet included!)

Plastic-Free July, 2022 – Part 3

Global plastics production is expected to quadruple by 2050, and that growth will require significantly more extraction of fossil fuels as feedstock. Doubling down on more fossil fuel extraction is the last thing that a warming, plastic-filled planet needs. Organizations across the world, from the United Nations to grassroots groups on the front lines are taking action to prevent the bad from getting worse.

Plastic-Free July, 2022 – Part 2

The term “recycling” is a dangerous thing because of how it inaccurately shapes our perceptions around the plastic lifecycle. Most plastic put in the recycle bin doesn’t get recycled, but even the industrial process of “chemical recycling” doesn’t necessarily create a closed-loop plastic system. Instead, it can often fuel increased health risks for those living nearby, increasing global temperatures, and demand for additional plastic.
