The World of Miyazaki – Paradoxes

Humans are paradoxical creatures, made from a complex recipe of our own individual experiences. However, we often define ourselves based on our relationships with others in the form of binary opposition. Modern politics and social media trade on labels and increasingly polarized positions that can organize people quickly and play on strong emotions, but those labels also limit our ability to understand each other.

Do Your Best / Do Something

2024 was hard, and thinking about resolutions at a time when I’m simply trying to hold myself together seems pointless. This year I intend to focus on building strategies for resilience instead of trying to make myself a “better person.” I hope I can succeed at achieving some level of self care – and that my actions can inspire others to do the same.

Man vs. Machine, Part 3 – The Real Culprit

We use machines to make our lives easier, but we are not making use of the time we save in a meaningful way. Omnipresent AI tools in our daily lives are contributing to our reduced capacity for long attention spans, research and curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity. We’re relinquishing some of the things that make us human, and it’s not AI’s fault; it’s ours.

Man vs. Machine, Part 2 – The Human Condition

While we don’t (yet) have artificial intelligence that can match human intelligence, we seem to have enough difficulty interacting with the Narrow AI that exists now. Such technology is supposed to make our lives easier – and in some ways it does – but some of our distinctly human skills, such as critical thought, creativity, and discernment seem to be eroding as we rely more on AI.

Where the Earth Meets the Sky

For some of us, science is like a religion, but the battle between science and religion has been raging for centuries. Hawai’i’s Mauna Kea is sacred ground, but it is also the site of several research telescopes. This situation reveals many difficult questions to ponder, including justifying the cost of scientific progress and determining who gets to make those decisions.

November 2023 General Election

It’s October 1: do you know where your ballot is? In this annual election summary blog post, we will look at Pennsylvania-wide judicial races and Allegheny County government races, with a nod to the importance of local elections too. Elections in “off-years” are sparsely attended but critical for multiple reasons. If you can vote, please educate yourself and exercise your civic duty.

Pride: The Fight Continues

Last month I had the pleasure of attending a drag brunch at a local brewery. The event received some backlash from the local community, which created a lot of media buzz. While the threats ultimately amounted to nothing, that is not always the case. While opposition to the LGBTQ community seems to be on the rise, our actions can play a big role in combating bigotry.

November Elections, 2022, Part 4 – Shifting Authority

Although the public has no direct control over who lands in the Supreme Court, we do have direct control over who is tasked with writing the laws the Supreme Court will interpret. With a conservative supermajority on the bench evaluating laws that govern abortion, discrimination, and elections, it is incumbent upon us – the voters – to understand what’s at stake when we elect our legislators.

Equity in Brewing, Part 4

Whether you’re new to craft beer or have been around for years, there is always more to learn about new styles, new breweries, and new initiatives to ensure that everyone can enjoy themselves. Heading into American Craft Beer Week, we’ll look at what we as individuals can do to promote a more equitable and transparent brewing industry and have more fun while doing it.

Equity in Brewing, Part 3

White men have long dominated the brewing industry, making women, people of color, and LGBTQ individuals feel unseen at best and unsafe at worst. The recent reckonings around sexism and racism in our society have impacted many aspects of our lives, including what we drink. This post sheds a light on efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the industry.
